H5P - Memory Game

Click on any image below to view full size.

1) Click 'Add an activity or resource'.

2) Choose 'H5P Interactive Content' and click 'Add'

3) There are 32 content types available for H5P in Myplace. We are going to create a 'Memory Game' piece of content. Scroll down and click on 'Memory Game' as highlighted by the red box.

4) This will bring up a section for you to be able to add 'matching' images. In this case we are going to add an image of a word that describes a type of distribution graph and an image of the matching distribution graph. (If you have other matching images you would prefer to use, please go ahead)

In the title field, type 'Distribution Graphs' (or alternative title - this instruction will be assumed from this point onwards)

Then click the 'Add' button to add your first image file.

5) Navigate to the relevant folder and choose the image with the words 'Normal Curve' on it by double clicking.

When saving the images you might use for your own 'memory game' it's a good idea to name the images appropriately to make sure that you match the correct images on creation of the games.

6) You'll see the image you've just uploaded in the image field (highlighted in red - above). You will be required to provide an alternative text for the image. Type 'Normal Curve Written Word' in that field (highlighted in green) then click the add button (higlighted in red below) to upload the matching image.

Any option marked with a red asterisk is a mandatory setting, something must be entered.

It's best practice when creating online content using images to provide 'alternative text', which, as explained in the image, will appear when you hover your cursor over the image. But more importantly it provides information to assistive software that may be used by those with impaired sight. Some systems (such as Myplace) don't allow you to upload an image without including alternative text.

7) Choose the matching image by double clicking. In this case you are looking for the image which shows a 'normal' distribution curve. To make it easier we have name this image file 'normal'.

8) You will now see the matching image in the matching image field. Don't enter any text in the alternative text but in the 'Description' field type the following;

"You found a match! This is what a normal distribution curve looks like"

This message will pop up when this specific match is made.

If we entered alternative text in the matching image, then this would ruin the 'gameness' of the activity for those using assistive technology. It may be that an individual has difficulty seeing enough to make out words but will be able to see a distribution graph.

If the individual is entirely blind, then they would not be able to use this online game at all and an alternative activity should be used.

9) Click the next 'card' and repeat the process above with 2 other matching images, then click the 'Add Card' button and repeat until you have added all the matching pairs.

10) Open the 'Look and Feel' settings and choose a colour as your 'theme colour' which will be the outline of the card.

Then click the 'Add' button to add an image which will display on the cards before you click to turn them over (when the game is setup)

11) Choose the Science faculty logo by double-clicking it.

12) Your settings should look like this, if that's the case then click 'Save and return to the class)

13) Click on the H5P link to check your game

14) It should look something like this. the first pair has been matched to show you what it looks like.
