Use of Data to inform Online Teaching

Myplace, based on Moodle, provides several reports on student activity which may provide information reflecting student engagement with the activities in an online class. These can be accessed from the class Administration menu:

The Logs report can be filtered to show an individual student’s activity in the class:

Within this menu the Activity Completion can be used to generate data. Students also report satisfaction in activities being “ticked off”, which a teacher can choose to happen automatically eg when a quiz score is achieved, or manually by the student eg when a document has been read: https://docs.moodle.org/38/en/Using_Activity_completion .

Activity completion allows a report to be generated:

Activity Completion and Formative Assessment

Combining Activity Completion with formative assessment can provide useful data. If a module runs on a weekly basis, for example, formative assessment towards the beginning of the week will allow the Activity Completion report to indicate aspects of progression, engagement and student performance by the end of the week.
