Create and facilitate an online learning and teaching session
If you need to create and deliver an online learning and teaching session, you can use Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Microsoft Teams is available to all staff. Most staff who use Zoom will have a Zoom Basic account, which limits meetings to 40 minutes. A small number of staff may have access to a paid Zoom licence, where this has been arranged to meet a specific requirement.
If you are unsure if you have access to a paid Zoom licence, refer to your line manager in the first instance.
For further enquiries, or to enquire about purchasing a Zoom licence, contact the Learning Space Support team.
Which platform should I choose?
Use the following flowchart to determine which platform you should choose based on the requirements you need for your online session. The recommended platform will be determined by whether you pay for an enhanced Zoom license, and the duration of your meeting. The https://universityofstrathclyde.atlassian.net/wiki/x/HACOVg guidance provides a comprehensive overview of the commonly used features in both platforms.
Creating your session in Myplace
Whether you create a Microsoft Teams event or a Zoom meeting, both platforms have an activity in Myplace to simplify the process. With editing switched, the Teams event and the Zoom meeting activities are selectable in the activity picker. Additionally, meeting details are saved in your Myplace site immediately for student access.
Microsoft Teams templates recommended for large scale, external events
There are two different templates that you can create using your Microsoft Teams or Outlook calendars. We don’t recommend these for online learning and teaching events, but they could be used for open days, online inductions, or for large-scale, external events.
Webinar - The Webinar format is designed for structured events with up to 1,000 attendees. Attendees have limited interaction and are mostly passive. Registration is supported/required. Would most commonly suit an external audience.
Town Hall - The Town Hall format is ideal for large-scale broadcasts. Interaction is minimal, unless Q&A is enabled. Attendees are view-only, and only organizers can present.
Other Microsoft Teams templates
There are two other templates available that you can create using your Microsoft Teams or Outlook calendars. These are Class and Lecture.
The Class template closely matches the Microsoft Teams event you can create in Myplace, but there are differences. A template creates a calendar item in your Outlook calendar; the Myplace Teams event does not. If you use the Class template, you will need to add the meeting details to your Myplace site manually.
We don’t recommend the use of the Lecture template as this allows the meeting chat to be available before and after the scheduled meeting time.
