This page explains how to set up completion tracking in a class and its activities and resources.

Enabling Completion tracking in a class

First, Completion tracking must be enabled in the class.

To do so, go to Administration > Class Administration > Edit settings. Once on the class settings page, go to the Completion tracking section, and choose 'Yes' for 'Enable completion tracking'.

Choosing 'Yes' for 'Show activity completion conditions' means that you will display the conditions to be met for each tracked activity in your class where the activity completion conditions (see below) are set to 'Show activity as complete when conditions are met (Automatic approach)'.

Also note that you will now get a 'Mark as done' button where where the activity completion conditions (see below) are set to 'Students can manually mark the activity as completed (Manual approach)'.

Setting up Activity completion on activities and resources

In order to check if users have completed an activity or checked a resource, Completion tracking must then be enabled on the relevant activities and resources (where completion needs monitored).

To do so, you must access the settings of the activity or resource. Depending on the type, there are two ways of doing this:

Completion tracking for an activity

Go to Administration > Assignment administration > Edit settings. Once on the page, go to the Activity completion section, and choose an option in 'Activity completion'.

Completion tracking for a resource

On the class page, click on the Turn Editing on button on the top right hand corner. Once editing is enabled, go to the relevant resource and click on 'Edit' and 'Edit settings'.

Completion tracking options

You have 3 different most common options available for Completion tracking:

  1. Do not indicate activity completion
This option won't enable any activity tracking
  2. Students can manually mark the activity as completed (Manual approach)
This will enable students to tick a box next to the activity or resource to indicate they have completed it.

You can set an expected date of completion with this option.

  3. Show activity as complete when conditions are met (Automatic approach)
This will automatically tick the box next to the activity and resource if the student has completed the activity.

You can set an expected date of completion with this option, and make sure that students must view the activity to complete it.

Quiz

In the case of quizzes, when choosing the 'automatic approach', you will see other settings that will determine whether a student has completed the activity or not.

  • Require viewStudent must view this activity to complete it
  • Require gradeStudent must receive a grade to complete this activity

Note that until a grade is received, the activity won't show as completed. A 'pass' or 'fail' icon may be displayed if a pass grade for the activity has been set.

  • Require passing grade - Student will complete the task only if they receive a passing grade or if all available attempts have been completed.
  • Expect completed on - this will tell students when they are expected to complete the activity by.
